Christmas at the Castle - Digital Art Contest
Christmas at the CastleChristmas at the Castle,
Why start and end the contest on the 13th? Throughout the ages Friday the 13th has been considered unlucky. Some theorized this superstition started back in Jerusalem when King Philip ordered the arrest of all the Knights Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307 - Friday the 13th.
But, the number 13 was not always considered unlucky. In the past many Pagans considered the number 13 as very lucky, because of the 13 lunar cycles each year. In addition, the Hebrew and Chinese lunar-solar calendars have 13 months in some years. But with the efforts of Christianity attempting to degrade all things Pagan, they promoted 13 as an unlucky number, with Friday also being considered a bad day of the week.
How did Friday come to be considered a bad day of the week? One theory says the superstition can be traced back to ancient myth. In Norse mythology, Friday is named for Frigga, the free-spirited goddess of love and fertility. When Norse and Germanic tribes converted to Christianity, Frigga was banished to a mountain top and labeled a witch. It was believed that every Friday, the spiteful Goddess convened a meeting with eleven witches, plus the devil — a gathering of thirteen — and plotted ill turns of fate for the coming week. For many centuries in Scandinavia, Friday was known as the "Witches' Sabbath."
